Lost in Kathmandu's "Old Town" I turned the corner on another small dirt path, and there he was in front of me. The narrow path was lined with boxes and trash piled as high as the doors - not a great background for a photo. That is why I had to crop the photo as a square, trash/boxes, on both sides of the doors.
A photojournalist CANNOT change ANYTHING in a picture, can not even move a tree limb out of the view, or you can loose you job, your career faster than a click of the shutter! So, I just walked in front of him down the path, hoping to find somewhere with a cleaner background.
And all of a sudden these colorful doors appeared in between all the garbage! I sat down on the dirt, leaning against the garbage on the wall behind me, and waited for him to walk in front of the doors, trying to catch him at the exact moment he was centered in the door's frame...
As in all of my photos, whenever possible, I ask the subject for their name, age, or if appropiate to sign a model's release. This old monk was in an old section of Kathmandu, and I was alone, and he did not understand English and I not Nepalese, so his name, or a release was not understood. He did acknowledge with a smile and a "yes" shake of his head, when I showed him his photo, on the screen on my camera...
What you see in the photos is what was there! All I did was darken the exposure, tweaked curves, saturation, and (forgive me, editor gods) used healing brush on some small pieces of paper, cig butts on the ground...
That's it. Ansel Adams once said, "I believe that sometimes I come upon a place at the exact moment God wants it to be photographed, and remembered forever." I know that feeling.
